TECHNIQUE
Focus Stacking Without a Focus Rail Using Camera Movement, Macro Diffuser, and Flash
Focus stacking is a technique where multiple photos are taken with different focus points and combined into one image that is sharp throughout the entire subject. This is particularly useful in macro photography, where depth of field is often extremely shallow. Instead of using a focus rail, you can slightly move the camera forward between each shot to shift the focus point manually. This requires steady hands or a stable setup, but is a practical method for field work or handheld macro photography. A macro diffuser is used to soften the light from the flash, reducing harsh shadows and highlights. Combined with a flash, this setup ensures consistent lighting across all shots in the focus stack, which is essential for high-quality results. The series of images is then processed in Helicon Focus, specialized software that merges them into one sharply focused photograph.
